Unknown Smiles

It is clear that time and alcohol have taken toll
And sorrow for a son whose life had only just begun
Has found a home in your soul
The key has turned to lock inside a past too sore to see
But I can see the boy who hides behind forgotten years

Memories
They fuel our longing for our former days
Remembering
The good our lives have seen

It is strange that just like yesterday we played, two boys
Busy making shields and spears to fend off all the years
That would steal our souls
But we were not to know those arms would never be enough
To guard us and protect us from the arrows life would throw

So we gather smiles of sympathy
So we gather unknown smiles
And listen for a while to yesterday
We’re touching the past today
