The Best in Me

I could wash these hands seven times
But there’s still no way to rid the stain
And I could give You all my usual lines
But I know I’ve caused You pain
I can’t believe the contraries in this heart

The double life that’s at work in me
Duelling desires enough to tear me apart
How can You look on me?

Still you wash my feet
Although You’ve seen the worst in me
And Your cleansing is complete
Until You see the best in me

I could pray but even then my heart lacks
The courage to discover my deception
As others view my transparent acts
I perform my sins to perfection
If this is freedom then I’ve misunderstood

And my faith is more like fear
And holiness is more than I ever could become
With this evil so near
